Слава тебје, Господи!

I have no words for the video below, but only tearsat first of sorrow, and then of joy. Truly, as we sing after hearing the Gospel of the Resurrection at Matins every Sunday, “through the Cross joy has come to the whole world”! The featured song is, once again, one of the Serbian duhovne pesme (the “spiritual songs” about which I’ve written earlier), and is usually sung during the joyful fifty days of the Paschal season. It has been recorded and produced as part of the efforts to raise funds to rebuild the ancient Djurdjevi Stupovi Monastery in Ras.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:35-37, RSV)

Glory to God, who has made us alive!

  1. Elizabeth> Sadly, as far as I know, there is no English-language webpage for the Djurdjevi Stupovi fundraiser. I imagine, however, that if you write to the information e-mail address listed on the Serbian website, they would be able to tell you (perhaps in better English than one would expect!) how to obtain the album in Europe (in America it's simply impossible to find it), or else how to contribute to the fund.

Aaron> I love them too, and I love these songs intensely. I have a couple of small "songbooks" of duhovne pesme, and I’m working hard at learning as many of them as I can. My absolute favorite one, though, is Andjeli pevaju. I just adore this song, and Christmas isn’t Christmas without it. I seem to recall that Frederica Mathewes-Green said in one of her books that the West has the East beat when it comes to Christmas songs; I believe she only said so because she had never heard this one!
